Green vs. Grey

 Section: A2

We chose the topic rural vs. urban, because both of us grew up in urban areas.  Having experienced life only in cities, we wanted to know what life what life was like in the rural areas and how it differed from how we live.  Rural and urban parts of India differ in several ways.  Just like people would expect in a city, there are billboards in the urban, advertising items such as clothing and stores.  Many people wear westernized clothes rather than traditional clothing.  Bikes, people, cars, and motorcycles fill the roads and streets, and even SUVs are starting to be driven by the rich people.  Also, in the urban, many people work in buildings, offices, and factories and have  been westernized in clothing, music, food, and many other things.  However, in the rural areas of India, things are quite different.  Rural people live in mud huts and travel by foot, camel carts, or oxcarts.  As far as carrying items, people often have to use their heads as a place to hold items.  Imagine life without modern technology!  In  rural areas most people work on farms and are more traditional in many aspects such as clothing, jobs, music, and styles of living.

In rural areas, people live in huts such as the ones below.

The roofs are made of straw thatched together, and the walls of the huts are made of mud.

The distances between houses are close with little space in each hut.

As seen in the picture below, there is no cement grounds but rather dirt grounds.

Unlike urban areas, there is no technology in rural areas.

There are no power lines, street lights, cars, billboards, or stores.

Compared to the urban picture, this picture is much simpler.

 VS.

In India, the cities are extremely crowded with billboard advertisement

filling the already packed streets.  Cars drive by in the traffic while others

walk to their destinations.  The urban areas of India are beginning to

industrialize as seen in this picture.  There are street lights, cars, stores,

and power lines.  This picture has a resemblance to the downtowns that

exist in the United States-- crowded with people, cars, and stores all

around.  Also, some people wear more westernized clothes as seen in the picture.

MOCK DIALOUGE

Karisal who grew up in the urban areas goes to visit her family who live in the rural areas.

Characters: Karisal=K

                   Aunt, Uncle= aunt and uncle

                   Chapal= C (cousin)

K: Hey everybody! What's up? How's everyone doing?

Aunt, uncle: [Look around confused].  uh...hello Kajal

C: It's okay. My parents aren't really used to the 'what's up?' and teenage talk.  Anyways, you should go rest awhile.  [leads Kajal to a hut and into a small, smelly room].

K: [After 30 min) I still can't fall asleep.  This place stinks!  It smells like goats, pigs, and rotten meat.  And this bed is so hard and small. [She gets up].

C: You're up already?  Well, since you're up, you might as well help out with the chores.

K: Chores?!  Like what?

C: Well, we have to feed all the animals, cows, pigs, and chicken.  We also have to clean the barns and tidy up the place.  [A chicken runs near Kajal].

K: Oh. my. gosh!  Is that a chicken? Ewww![Runs away].

C: It's okay it's just a chicken.  We might as well start now.  [Kajal follows her cousin into the barn].  So, you can start by feeding the chicken and pigs while I milk the cow unless you want to help milk the cows.

K: You mean the squirty thing we see in videos and pictures?  No, I'm good.  I'll stick to doing the feeding.

[After 1 hr.]

K: Whew! Come to think of it, I'd rather sit in class, pretend to listen to a lecture, and count the ceiling tiles than do farm work.  I'm starving.  Let's go order some pizza from Jet's Pizza.  Normally, I hate memorizing things, but I memorized Jet's Pizza's number just for you guys.

C: Um. yeah about the pizza.  No there's no phone connection in this area and no pizza place here.  We're eating rice with curry and vegetables.

K: Oooh! you mean curly fries? Yummy! Let's go.

[1 week later]

K: Bye aunt, uncle, and Chapal!  I'll miss you guys, the animals, and the food.  I'll come visit you guys next year.  And next time I'll be able to help with the chores properly and eat CURRY.  See you!
