Bhangra Bharata Natyam
The dance styles of India vary greatly between traditional types and modern types, but they also have many similarities. In traditional Indian dance, the moves and style were greatly influenced by India and Pakistan, whereas the modern day indian dance allows greater amounts of western influence. For example, things are much more reserved and structure as well as much less promiscuous in traditional Indian dance. However, we find that in more recent developed dancing choreographed and/or performed in India are highly based on free style and tend to be some what indiscriminate. These differences often cause controversy between the older and younger members of society. We chose the topic of Indian dance because of its interesting controversy and because of pure interest drawn from introduction and experience with IASA at our school.

[An Indian Mother is Picking Up Her Daughter From Dance Practice...]
Mother- [stern, disapproving look] What exactly do you think you are here to do?
Daugher- What do you mean mom; I was just at rehearsal for Bharata Natyam!
Mother- Oh yeah? Then why could i hear that bhangra garbage playing in your studio?!?!?!
Daughter- Oh...[nervous laugh] you just came after we were already finished dancing.
Mother- Uh...huh. And that's why it's been playing for the past hour and a half.
Daughter- [whisper] oh dear... Well you see...We we're simply trying out new things.
Mother- And what new things are you talking about?! Dancing inappropriately?
Daugher- [talking very quickly] Well mom, it's not really inappropriate. You see, it's just..new... things are changing.
Mother- Well i don't understand this nonsense. This is not the traditional dancing your father and I raised you to perform.
Daughter- Well, I think you need to expand your horizons a little. You know, familiarize yourself with more modern day stuff...
Mother- Oh. So then my ways aren't good enough for you?
Daughter- NO. It's just that I want to do what I like and what is cool and I think that if you want to integrate yourself into society, then you need to learn how to do this stuff...
Mother- HOW DARE YOU TALK THAT WAY TO ME!!! I think you need to be banned from dancing now!
Daughter- WHAT!?!?!?!?!?
Mother- You heard me. If you won't dance Bharata Natyam, then you WILL quit. This bhangra stuff is not respectful to our culture.
Daughter- But...but it's just what makes me happy...
Mother- Yeah, well, too bad. You're NOT GOING!
[Time Passes...]
Daughter- ...Well...what if I did both...?
Mother- I'll have to discuss it with your father.
Daughter- [rolls eyes] [under her breath] whatever.
Mother- Don't think that I can't hear you young lady!
Daughter- I didn't SAY anything!!!
Mother- [Warning look] Watch your attitude. If you mind your manners...then I will considering changing my mi--
Daughter- --[high-pitched squeal] OMG thank- you soooo much!!
Mother- BUT! Keep in mind. There will be rules.
Daughter- [Not really paying attention anymore] Yeah. Definately. Sure Mom...whatever you say.
Mother- Are you even listening to me?!
Daughter- Of course I'll do my homework mom.
