Second Generation Indian-Americans

This is a video of a bhangra team at Wayne State University. This is the  perfect example of Indian and American cultures mixing.

Introduction

Indian americans have to balance their culture and their own interests. The parents

want the children to retain their culture, and the children do to an extent.but they only

absorb the fun parts, like the dance and food. Often times the parents are very

traditional and dont allow the kids to participate in sports and other such activities.

Parents also disagree with friends of the opposite gender, and prefer if the kids stay

within the family circle.  This is because Indian Americans prefer a safety factor, which

derives from their culture.  This is why India produces mainly lawyers, doctors, and engineers:

because they are safe, well paying professions.  But, this second generation of Indian Americans

prefer the american way of life - free and spirited.  They do not want to keep the constraints

that their parents do, such as hanging out with female friends. all in all, indian-americans get the

benefit of being a part of two cultures and have a certain aspect of their personalities in common.

Dialogue

Mom: Son it is time for temple.

son: Mom, I dont want to go to temple its boring and none of my friends are in it.

Mom: I dont care, its your culture and religion, you need to understand it. Always put it before anything else.

Son: MOM I'm not going.

Mom: WHAT DID YOU SAY!!!!

Son: *sigh* Nothing, I'm coming.

Mom: Beta (son) you make me so proud, all these other indian americans have no culture at all.
